Happy Father’s Day

I’ve learned so much about life and business from him, so I wanted to share a few quotes from my Dad’s book with you. Happy Father’s Day!

“My grandfather Popsie immigrated to America in 1905 when he was twelve. To help his family financially, he became a rag picker in the United States, driving his horse and buggy around looking for junk on the side of the road that he could sell … It’s amazing what you can do in this country if you’re willing to work hard and are smart.”

“I couldn’t wait for the Saturdays when Popsie would take me to the pawnshop. I was scared the first time I had to negotiate with a customer, but with practice it got easier. I learned that I could sell. Gradually, Popsie let me learn and then allowed me to try out all aspects of the business, from buying to selling and all of the negotiating in between.”

“…Knowing that I was working for my family made me stronger…I did whatever I possibly could to raise money. When money was tight, nothing I owned was sacred to me. The fear of not being able to grow my business was driving me on and nothing was off-limits.”

“It is essential to answer your doubts every time that they come up. If you let them linger, thinking that you’ll deal with them later when you’re feeling stronger or when your life improves, those doubts will continue to drag you down every minute you fail to deal with them.”

“I believe in hard work and I believe that anyone who works hard enough can succeed. But I also believe that you have to see your career for what it’s worth: as a way to build a life that’s always interesting, always rewarding, always challenging, and always focused on the legacy you’ll leave behind.”

“America was built by entrepreneurs, and it still rewards those who have the initiative, drive, and commitment to build something new.”

“I hope my story will encourage you to face your fears, risk failure, and let your fears push you forward instead of holding you back.”
